Ann Patterson Loyd, age 87, of Rockford, IL, died peacefully in her sleep Nov. 14, 2012. Ann was born April 25, 1925, in Silver City, MS, the daughter of Clifford T. and Amiann "Della" (Mahaffey) Patterson. She graduated from Blue Mountain College in 1945 with majors in Business and History and a minor in Education. On September 25, 1945, she married Benjamin F. Loyd in Silver City, MS. They first lived in Berea, KY, where Ann taught at the Berea High School. They moved to Clinton, MS, where Ann taught business classes at Mississippi College, and was secretary to the college President. From there, they moved to Atlanta, GA and Columbia, SC where she served as Executive Secretary at Burlington Mills and Merrill Lynch. The family continued to move as Ben pursued graduate degrees. In Louisville, KY Ann was secretary to the President of Carver School of Missions and Social Work, and later Registrar. In Chicago, she was secretary to Dr. Nicholas Metropolis, head of the University of Chicago Computer Institute, where her nimble fingers and crochet hooks helped complete intricate wiring for the MANIAC II computer. The family moved to Lindenwood, IL, where Ben served as minister of the Lindenwood Union Church (33 yrs) and also of Monroe Center Community Church (10 yrs.). Ann taught at Kings Grade School (3 yrs) and at Stillman Valley High School (23 yrs). Ann always appreciated visits and messages from her many former students. Ann and Ben moved to Byron, IL in 1978. Ann moved to Wesley Willows in 2006, where she served a term on the Resident's Council. Ann was a member of the United Church of Byron, a founding member of the Rochelle League of Women Voters, the Choraliers, Mendelssohn Club, Rockford Coronado Concert Association, Rockford Jazz Society, the Pfaff (Sewing) Club, and the Kenrock Weavers Guild. She served various internal positions in the Democratic Party and was honored as "Democratic Woman of the Year" in Ogle County. Ann was politically active her entire life, proudly casting her final vote in the 2012 presidential election. Ann was predeceased by her husband, Rev. Ben Loyd, on Nov. 22, 1994. She is survived by a daughter, Kathryn (Philip) Heyer of Rockford, IL; a son, Stephen Christopher Loyd of Ashland, VA; a grandson, Benjamin E. Heyer of Rockford, IL; and a brother, Robert C. Patterson of Sun City, AZ. Memorial services will be held at United Church of Byron on Nov. 29 at 4:00 pm, with Rev. Mike Mulberry officiating. Visitation will be at 3:00 preceding the service. A short service will also be held at Wesley Willows Chapel on Friday, Nov. 30 at 3:00 pm, led by Rev. Bruce Main. Memorials can be made to the Benjamin and Ann Loyd Scholarship Fund at Stillman Valley High School, or to the Good Samaritan Fund at Wesley Willows. Interment of cremains at Byron Cemetery will be private.
