Deborah Jane Van Dyke,64 - ROCHELLE - Debby Van Dyke (Metz) of Rochelle passed away Friday, August 16 in her home after a courageous battle with cancer. In her final days, Debby was lovingly supported by dear friends and family. She was born December 24, 1948 in Rockford, Ill to Jim and Betty Metz. Debby married her college sweetheart and true love Arlyn Van Dyke June 13, 1970 and together, they made Rochelle a lifetime home. A dedicated educator, Debby taught English then oversaw the Rochelle Township High School Library for 33 years. She touched the minds and hearts of many students and teachers. Debby took great pride in her two children Todd Jeffrey Van Dyke (Jen DeMay) and Lisa Jane Van Dyke. Her greatest joy was being "Granny" to her five adoring grandchildren - Ellen Jane Mawyer, Mazie Jane Mawyer, James Paul Van Dyke, William Jacob Van Dyke, and Elizabeth Alice Van Dyke. Debby loved reading, cooking, crossword puzzles, collecting Fiesta and antiques and spending time with her closest friends from church, school and "the book club girls." Partnering with her husband and best friend, Debby passionately restored their 125 year old home and enjoyed touring the country seeking out America's hidden historical gems. She took great interest in Rochelle history leading local events and celebrations. Debby was a woman of faith and dedicated to First Presbyterian Church in Rochelle. She was blessed to love and be loved by her mother Betty Metz, brother, Don Metz (Kristie) and niece Jennifer Metz. She was preceded in death by her Father, Harold James Metz and nephew, Matthew James Metz.
In celebration of Debby's life and love, the family will host a visitation at First Presbyterian Church in Rochelle from 10:30 to 12:30 on Saturday August 24. Lunch will be served from 11:30 to 12:30 and a Memorial Service will follow at 1:00. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Flagg Township Historical Society, Rochelle Township High School Library or First Presbyterian Church.
