Dick Kalla, 73, of Steward, IL, passed Monday, July 16, 2012 from a biking accident near his home. Born on May 16, 1939 in Chicago, IL to Joseph and Anella Lemezis Kalla. Married Diane Stahnke (1967). Graduated from Gage Park High School, Chicago (1957), Eastern Illinois University (1961), and received MA from Ball State. Played baseball for the Midlothian White Sox. Taught PE at St. John Brebeuf (Niles) and District 54 (Schaumburg) for over 35 years. Started the Northurban Day Camp. Respected umpire and referee for UMPS for over 30 years. Recently served as trustee for Reynolds Township. Active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Rochelle. Planned on playing baseball for the Villages, Florida (2013 season). Avid Cubs fan.
Survivors include his wife Diane Kalla of Steward; 2 daughters: Meredith (Jeff) McKeown of Franksville, WI and and Liz (Tom) Henninger of Hampshire, IL; 4 grandchildren: Reagan and Georgia McKeown, and Hannah and Haley Henninger; 3 siblings: Elaine (Kenneth) Lehocky of Berrien Springs, MI, Edward Kalla of Oklahoma City, OK, and Lynda Palenik of Orland Park, IL. Preceded in death by his siblings: Joseph Kalla, and Lois Kalla Berry.
Service to be on Friday, July 20, 2012 at 11:00 AM at the First Presbyterian Church, 1100 Calvin Road, Rochelle, IL with Rev. Munn Hinds officiating. Visitation will be at the church on Thursday, July 19th from 6- 8 PM and also 10 - 11:00 AM prior to the funeral on Friday.
Burial to be at Acacia Park Cemetery in Chicago, IL.
