Donald O. (Don) Plumley, 85, of Rochelle passed away on March 19, 2016 at his home with his family by his side after battling cancer.
Don was born on Aug. 16th, 1930 in DeKalb, the son of Paul Sr. and Anna (Rewerts) Plumley. A life long resident of Rochelle, Don attended Rochelle Township High School, graduating in 1949 where he excelled in all sports, being named honorary captain of the football team, he played basketball, and participated in track and field. During the 1948 basketball season, Don scored 30 points in a single game, at that time a school record. For his outstanding play Don was awarded the Hackett Trophy, for most valuable player, and the Hall Trophy, for free throw accuracy.
After serving in the military from 1950-1952, Don married Alice "Weedie" Brummer on September 19th, 1954. From this marriage, three sons were born, Randall Lee, Steven Jay, and Gregg Alan. To support his wife and family, Don worked for Standard Oil for 37 years as a truck driver, having never been in an accident, another honor that was bestowed upon him.
Don was a devoted husband to Weedie and caregiver during her many years of illness. He was also a dedicated father and grandfather to his three boys and seven grandchildren. His passion was his lawn, garden and his roses…of which he enthusiastically shared with his family and many friends.
Don was preceded in death by his wife, his parents Paul Sr. and Anna Plumley, his daughter-in-law Robin (Randy) Plumley, and sister-in-law Karna (Paul) Plumley.
Don will be missed dearly by his (three sons), Randy of Rochelle, Steven of Rochelle, and Gregg and Marcy (Sommer) of Carol Stream; seven grandchildren, Angela (Chris) Lohse, Matthew, Sarah, David (Jessica) Plumley, Megan, Rachel and Kristen Plumley; one great grandchild, Faith Lohse; and his brother Paul of Rochelle.
