Donald Arthur Walter of Rochelle, Illinois passed away at his home on Tuesday, August 29, 2023. Don was born on December 22, 1929 in West Brooklyn, Illinois to Florian and Gladys(McCrea) Walter. Don's father was a Freight Agent with the CB&Q Railroad, and upon his father's transfer, moved to Batavia, Illinois in 1932 where he resided in the Depot located on Van Buren Street.
After graduating from Batavia High School, Don worked for the Jewel Tea Company in Wheaton, Illinois. He proudly served in the Navy from 1950-1954 aboard the U.S.S. Paiute, ATF-159.
Don married Leola M. Berg on May 17, 1951 at Our Lady of Victory Chapel on the Naval Base in Norfolk, Virgina. After leaving the Navy, they eventually settled in Batavia, Illinois where they raised their family. After retirement from All-Steel, Inc., they moved to Rochelle, Illinois. He enjoyed volunteering at church, annual camping trips to Devil's Lake, spending time with his family and playing with his grandchildren and great-
grandchildren.
Survivors include three sons: Donald K. (D'Anne) Walter of Orangeburg, SC, David A. (Terry) Walter of Rockford, IL, and Daniel W. (Christina) Walter of Rochelle, IL and one daughter: Katherine L. Barker of Rochelle, IL; nine grandchildren: Ashley (Caleb) Dorman of Rockford, MI, James (Nick) Reeve, of Portland, OR, Christopher (Anna) Reeve of Hudsonville, MI, Benjamin (Melissa) Walter of DeKalb, IL, Kristin (Alex) Yorko of Grand Junction, CO, Austin (Micaela) Walter of Hamilton, MT, Shannin (Luke) Overland of Missoula, MT, Andy Walter of Beijing, China and Jillee Walter of Charleston, SC; six great- grandchildren: Juliet and Charlie Dorman, Olivia and Eleanor Walter, Lilyana Walter and Walter Reeve; and one sister, Delores Holm.
In addition to his parents, Don was preceded in death by his wife, Leola; daughter, Jeanette Reeve; granddaughter, Krista Walter; brother, Florian A. Walter, and sisters: Charlene Gamble and Roberta Carlson.
The visitation will be from 5:00 - 8:00 P.M., Friday, September 1, 2023 at the Unger-Horner Funeral Home, 400 N. 6th St., Rochelle. There will be a prayer service Friday evening at 7:30 P.M. at the funeral home. Funeral mass will be held at 9:00 A.M., Saturday, September 2 at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 236 Kelley Drive, Rochelle with Father Jesus Dominguez officiating. The burial will be at 11:30 A.M., Saturday, September 2 at River Hills Memorial Park in Batavia, IL. Memorials may be made in Don's memory to OSF Hospice or The Depot Museum in Batavia, Illinois.
