Erik Paul Gilbert, 52, passed away Wednesday, May 31, 2023 at Rush Hospital in Chicago, Illinois.  Erik was born on July 7, 1970 to Paul A. and Karen M. (Burright) Gilbert in DeKalb, IL.

From a young age, it was evident that Erik possessed a rare kindness, empathy, and a determination to make a positive impact on those around him. These qualities would come to define his character and shape his journey through life. Erik graduated from Illinois Wesleyan University while playing football for all four years. He was an avid Chicago sports fan and enjoyed golfing and boating.  He loved taking care of his family and walking his dog, Sadie, through the park. He also enjoyed reading, taking family vacations to the Northwoods, and watching sports with his father and son. He cherished the time he spent teaching Alex tennis and watching him excel over the years.

Erik is survived by his son, Alex Gilbert of Rochelle; the mother of his son, Wendy Gilbert of Rochelle; his father, Paul Gilbert of Rochelle; brother, Aaron (Julie) Gilbert of Cary, IL; his uncle, David (Sharon) Gilbert; nieces: Molly and Ellie Gilbert; special family, Peggy and Chuck Wagner; Debbie, Vince, Kiley and Kelsey O'Brien, Dede, Tim, Mallory, Lauren, and Taylor Ponto, and Agatha Knaak.

He is preceded in death by his mother, Karen Gilbert, on February 15, 2012; grandfather, Butch Burright and grandmother, Donna Olson.

The visitation will be from 5:00 - 6:45 P.M., Tuesday, June 6, 2023 at the Unger-Horner Funeral Home, 400 N. 6th St., Rochelle.  The funeral service will follow at 7:00 P.M., Tuesday with Judy Williams officiating.  Memorials may be made to the family for Alex's college fund.  Visit www.ungerhorner.com to sign the online guest book.
