Rochelle

Erika Charlotte Fischer, 97, passed away Tuesday, December 31, 2019, at the Rochelle Community Hospital. She was born November 10, 1922 in Liebenstein, Germany, the daughter of Ernst and Minna (Jaeger) Schmidt. Erika married Manfred W. Fischer on February 28, 1948 in Liebenstein, Germany.

Erika immigrated to the U.S. with her husband and two daughters in 1958. She lived in Aurora, IL, Wisconsin Dells, WI, Rochelle, IL and at the Meadows of Franklin Grove, IL. Erika worked at Anchor Brush in Montgomery, IL and was a homemaker who enjoyed gardening, baking, cooking, knitting, and crocheting. Erika volunteered for many years at the Rochelle Community Hospital gift shop and was a member of the hospital auxiliary. She enjoyed traveling with her family and with her friends in her later years.

Erika is survived by two daughters, Elke Grennan of Rochelle and Inge Buchberger of Sugar Grove; four grandchildren, Brian Buchberger of Plano, Brandon Buchberger of Elburn, Ryan Grennan of Rochelle and Eric Grennan of Chandler, AZ; six great-grandchildren, Anaiah, Anthony, Beautiful, Savannah, Maddison, and Eryn Grennan. She is also survived by a sister, Elisbeth Lorenz of Cape Coral, FL, whom Erika was like a mother to. Erika is also survived by many long time friends.

In addition to her parents, Erika is preceded in death by her husband, Manfred, in 1995; sisters, Dora, Anni Braun, Helga Dierolf, and Christa; and brothers George, Horst, Martin, and Dieter Schmidt.

Cremation care has been provided by the Unger-Horner Funeral Home and Cremation Services. A memorial service will take place at 11:00 A.M. on Monday, January 6, 2020 at the Rochelle United Methodist Church with Pastor Rob Hamilton officiating. Memorial visitation will be from 10:00 A.M. until 11:00 A.M. on Monday at the Rochelle United Methodist Church. Entombment of cremated remains will take place at a later date in Lawnridge Cemetery in Rochelle. Memorials in Erika's name may be directed to the Alzheimer's Association.
