Ethel Marie (Finley) Reints, 91, formerly of Genoa, Illinois, died Tuesday, April 24 in her home at Rosewood Estate, Waterloo, IA.
Ethel was born on 1 June 1915 at Brownstown, Indiana, oldest in a family with 6 brothers. During childhood, her family moved to northern Illinois where Ethel attended the one room country Renwick School near Esmond.
Ethel married Earl Reints on 3 Oct 1934 and they were married nearly 70 years when Earl died in 2004.
She is survived by their four children - Philip Leo (Darlene), Pinedale, WY, Robert Earl Jr. (Delores), Dysart, IA, Ruth Helen (Larry) Mayo, Bellevue, WA and Kenneth Eugene, Peoria, IL, 8 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren and a brother, Don Finley, Beloit, WI. She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Ruth (Evans) Finley, 5 brothers (Ivan, Art, Bob, Delbert and Clinton ) and a grandchild, Connie (Reints) Kahler.
Ethel and Earl farmed in northern Illinois for 48 years progressing to bigger farms over the years until 1982 when they moved off the farm to their retirement home in Genoa, Illinois. They traveled extensively in their retirement years to Hawaii, South America, Europe, Africa and throughout the USA.
Ethel was active in community leadership roles. She is a life-long member of the Methodist Church and taught Sunday School in her child rearing years. Ethel was also active in Home Bureau and was an active leader and supporter of the Lyn-De 4-H Club where many of the area children first learned and used speaking and leadership skills.
Family loved holiday gatherings at Grandma Ethel's and she enjoyed cooking and preparing for them. Everyone enjoyed her delicious meals and special Christmas pie (white filling with coconut and a cherry on top).
Ethel enjoyed raising beautiful flower gardens, sewing club and other hobbies including quilting and collecting tea cups, glassware and antiques.
Visitation will be at Unger- Horner Funeral Home, Rochelle, IL, Fri, 27 April, 5 – 7 PM and the funeral service will be at Unger-Horner Funeral Home, Sat, Apr 28, 10:00 AM. with burial at Lindenwood Cemetery followed by lunch and fellowship at Lindenwood Union Church.
Memorial gifts to Lindenwood Cemetery or Dysart Geneseo Methodist Church, where Ethel was a member, may be directed to Unger-Horner Funeral Home.
