Obituary

George Edward Burgess died peacefully at 96 years old, at his home in Loves Park, IL, on Monday, May 11, 2026. Ed was born to George William Burgess and Sophia Pearl McGlothen in Indianapolis, Indiana on July 31, 1929.

He is survived by his daughters: Loretta (Mike, recently deceased) Thompson, Teresa Shriver; seven grandchildren – Jennifer and Ken Stodola, Michael and Missy (Mincemoyer) Thompson, Debbie and Kevin Pike, Michelle Thompson, Joseph Thompson, Daniel and Mexi (Fiallos) Shriver and Suzanne Shriver; 18 great grandchildren, 13 great great grandchildren and many loving relatives.

He is preceded in death by his loving wife, Mary Suzanne Mitchell Burgess. They were married August 13, 1949. Suzie was born February 24, 1932 and died May 17, 2019, just three months short of 70 years of marriage. He is also preceded by both parents and his siblings: Louise (Eugene) Jones, Hazel Wheeler Gore (Kenneth and Wayne), Catherine Riley (Richard), Loretta Burgess (died at 5 years old) and his half sister JoAnn Burgess Rowe.

Ed and Suzie resided in Plainfield, Indiana until 1967 when Ed joined the Country School Restaurant family and moved to Illinois. Their first Country School was in Rantoul. They also served DeKalb, Belvidere and Park Forest until eventually ending up in Rochelle, where they are remembered fondly for serving the community as the long-term owners of the Country School Restaurant….known to all as Mr. B.

They moved to Rochelle in April of 1970 and moved to Rockford, IL in November of 2006. Ed and Suzie moved in with their daughter, Teresa in Loves Park, IL in 2013 where they spent their remaining years there. While living in Rochelle, Ed and Suzie were members of the United Methodist Church and while in the Rockford area were members of Riverside Community Church.

There will be no memorial service. Burial will be in the Riverside Community Church Crematory Garden, Machesney Park, IL along with his beloved wife, Suzie. Cremation care has been provided by the Unger-Horner Funeral Home of Rochelle. Visit www.ungerhorner.com to sign the online guest book.
