George Howard Streitberger, 90, died at his home in Rochelle, Illinois on November 24, 2015. He had been suffering from dementia for the past several years.
George was born on December 15, 1924, in Wheaton, Illinois to George Frederick (Fred) and Rose Belle, nee Sleep, Streitberger. He graduated from Wheaton High School in 1944 and earned an accounting degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1948. He spent his entire career at Edward Hines Lumber Company, where he met his beautiful wife of 50 years, Joan. They raised their family in Glen Ellyn, Illinois. George retired from Hines in 1999 after 45 years of service with the company. He and Joan relocated to Rochelle, Illinois in 1992.
George will be remembered fondly for many things – most notably his sense of humor, his integrity and how he treated people with kindness and fairness. In addition to raising eight children, he found time to volunteer for several causes dear to his heart such as serving as a Eucharistic minister at Saint Petronille Catholic Church in Glen Ellyn Illinois and Saint Patrick Catholic Church in Rochelle, Illinois. He was also an enthusiastic volunteer at Rochelle Community Hospital.
George is preceded in death by his parents along with the love of his life, Joan. He is survived by his eight children: Carol (Gilles), Jane, Laura (Mark), Will, Lisa (Barry), Tom, Rich and David; his grandchildren: Sean, Thomas (Kim), April, Hailey, Hillary, Hannah, Bria and Hope (Juan); and two great grandsons: Hayden and Liam. He is also survived by his sister Doris Springer of Spring Valley, California, and his brothers-in-law, Don Miller and David (Dee) Hansen. His final years and months were made immeasurably more enriched and comfortable through the tireless dedication of his caregiver, Matt Russell, along with the around-the-clock devotion of George's son, Tom. To them, the family is forever grateful.
