Gerald O. Wine, 90, of Rochelle passed away Monday, December 8, 2014 peacefully at home. Jerry was born December 31, 1923 in Chicago, Illinois to Olan M. and Ruth M. (Heckman) Wine. He married Luan Bown on June 6, 1948 in Bushnell, IL. He received his bachelors in 1947 and masters in 1948 from Western Illinois State Teachers College (now Western Illinois University) in Macomb, IL 1947 and 1948. Jerry taught at Rochelle Township High School for 30 years, retiring in 1985. He also taught seven years in Central Illinois (Deland-Weldon and Spoon River Valley school districts) prior to Rochelle and night classes at NIU for some years.
Jerry was very involved in many organizations through out his life time. He was a 58 year member of First Presbyterian Church in Rochelle where he served as elder and treasurer and trustee. He was a member of the American Legion; Retired Teachers Association of Lee-Ogle Counties; life member of NEA and IEA; 50 year member of Horicon Lodge #244, member of the Tebala Shrine; 50 year member of Valley of Peoria Consistory, 32-degree mason; Kiwanis Golden K, past president; life member and former treasurer of Flagg Township Historical Society and life member of Disabled American Veterans. He served on the HOPE board and worked with the Rochelle School Volunteer Program. He was a veteran of World War 11, fighting in the Battle of the Bulge; receiving Purple Heart, Good Conduct medal and Silver Star Medal.
He is preceded in death by his parents and a brother, R. Michael Wine.
Survivors include his wife, Luan, daughters: Vicki Wine (James E. Betts) of Rio, IL and Nicki (Robert M.) Como of Berwyn, IL; grandchildren: Michael and Christy Como; sister, Evelyn (Dean) Wilderman of Decatur, IL; sister-in-law, Sue Wine of Colorado Springs, CO; nieces: Deb Grotfeldt of Houston, TX and children (Jessie and Andy), Michelle Wine (Lee Linnenburger) of Colorado Springs, CO and children (Ellie, Liam, Laena), Sherri (Rick) Winder of Colorado Springs, CO; nephews: Tom Williams of Fort Wayne, IN and children (Krista and Blake), Dennis (Jen) Kramer-Wine of Cincinnati, OH and child (Jade) and several cousins.
A memorial service will be held 1:00 P.M., Saturday, December 13, 2014 at the First Presbyterian Church, 1100 Calvin Rd., Rochelle with Pastor Doug Forsberg and Rev. Dr. James Tilley officiating. There will be a time of reception with light refreshments and cookies immediately following the service.
