Harold Edward Pate, 63, formerly of Rochelle, IL, passed away Wednesday, February 11,
2009, at Hospice of the Valley, Mesa, Arizona. Visitation will be held Tuesday,
February 17, from 4 to 8 at Unger-Homer Funeral Home, Rochelle, IL. Services will be
held Wednesday, February 18, 2009, at 10:00 a.m. at Unger-Homer Funeral Home.
Harold was born October 6, 1945, in East St. Louis, IL to Daniel "Howard" & Zady Ann
(Kelley)Pate. He married Carol Grace Chambers on December 29, 1964, in DeKalb, Illinois.
Harold served in the United States Army from 1962 - 1982. During his military time,
he served in the Vietnam War. Harold was a lifetime member of the VFW serving
as commander of the Rochelle post and past commander of the VFW 6th District. Harold
retired from the maintenance department at Kishwaukee Community College in 2000.
Harold is survived by his wife, Carol; 3 sons, Harold (Rhonda) Pate Jr. of Rocky Ford,
CO., Jerry (Sheri) Pate of Hattiesburg, MS, and Doug (Marcy) Pate of Anamosa, IA.
Harold enjoyed spending time with his 7 grandchildren; Kyle Pate (Camiel Thomas),
Kyrie (Garrett) Carson, Nathan Groth, Andrew Groth, Tori Pate, Kaitlynn Pate, and Drew
Pate. Harold also had 2 great-grandchildren; Andrea Pate and Serena Groth and was
expecting another due in May. Harold is also survived by a sister Annie Merrill, of
Wisconsin Dells, WI and a brother Donald Pate of Plato, MO, and many brothers-in-law
and sisters-in-law on Carols' side, and several nieces and nephews. Harold is also going
to be greatly missed by Butterscotch and Lucky, their 2 Shitzu's.
Harold was proceeded in death by his parents, and siblings; Goldie Sloan, Viola Barnett,
Beulah Reynolds, Ronald Pate, Jeweldean Pate, Arlie Pate, and Myrtle Louise Pate.
Harold was blessed to be able to spend the last 8 years of his life traveling all over the
United States and Alaska in their RV enjoying full time Rving with his wife, Carol,
Butterscotch, and Lucky.
In lieu of Flowers: A memorial has been established for Shriners Children's Hospital or Juvenile
Diabetes Foundation which have both provided services for Harold's grandchildren,
Kyle and Kaitlynn.
