James L. Bolen, 80, passed away with his family at his side Monday, October 3, 2016 in DeKalb, IL. Jim was born February 5, 1936 to Frank E. and Myra (Wingert) Bolen in Ashton, IL. Jim married Karen Ewing on January 29, 1956 in Hammond, IN. He is preceded in death by three brothers: Edward, William and Frank Jr. and three sisters: Kathleen, Mary and Lois.
Jim enjoyed spending time with family and friends, playing golf, attending sporting events, playing cards, telling stories while cooking on the grill, or engaging in any kind of game in the back yard. He retired from the grain business after nearly 50 years at the same elevator on the east edge of town. Ewing Grain Co., Ashton Grain, Fasco, ADM -- the name changed, but Jim was always there to serve his many farm customers. Jim served on the Ashton Village Board and managed the Ashton Cemetery for many years. He was a member of the Ashton United Methodist Church, Ashton Lions Club and Dixon Elks Lodge. Jim was an avid fan of many sports, and was especially enthusiastic about his beloved Chicago Cubs and Green Bay Packers.
Jim is survived by his wife, Karen, two children: Randy (Sherri) Bolen of Urbana, IL and Kristine (Carl) Pierce of Reedsburg, WI; three grandchildren: Ashley (Megan) Bolen, Spencer (Jenna Harshbarger) Bolen and Austin (Angela) Gillis and three great grandchildren: Claire Gillis, Louis Bolen and Mason Bolhous.
The funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M., Friday, October 7, 2016 at the Ashton Methodist Church, 906 Richardson Ave., Ashton, with Pastor Laura Crites officiating. The visitation will be prior to the service from 9:00 - 10:45 A.M. at the church. Burial will follow the service at the Ashton Cemetery. A memorial has been established.
