Obituary

John T. Havens, age 90, passed on peacefully to be with Jesus in Heaven at his home on Tuesday, June 16, 2015. John was born April 8, 1925 to Charles and Bertha Faye (Thornton) Havens in Normal, IL. Directly out of high school, John was drafted into the army before he even had time to enlist. He was stationed at Liverpool and Bristol, England; Utah Beach in Normandy, France; and Antwerp, Belgium during World War II. John would later tell that his time with the army from 1943 - 1946 was one of two significant events that would have a huge impact on his life. The second one was choosing to attend the University of Illinois after being discharged from the army. He went on to graduate with a degree in accounting and management. He married Sara J. "Sally" Stretch on November 24, 1951 in Normal, IL. She preceded him in death on November 28, 2001.

Initially, John worked for Del Monte (at that time, known as Cal Pack) for nearly 20 years as an accountant. Following Del Monte, he was the Rochelle City Clerk for 25 years. He concurrently worked for Flagg Township as the Township Clerk from 1969 to 1993 and supervisor of General Assistance from 1993 to 2005 for a total of 39 years. John was the treasurer for the Rochelle Township High School for over 20 years, a member of Kiwanis for over 55 years, and a member of the Rochelle United Methodist Church. Here, he held many offices and taught a third grade Sunday School class for a number of years. John was involved in other various organizations such as Meals on Wheels, the Red Cross, Toastmasters and Alpha Kappa Psi. He was even the news announcer for Rochelle TV Cable Company for eight years, from 1965 through 1973. John was an avid Green Bay Packers fan.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Faye; wife, Sally; and son, Barry.

John is survived by his daughter, Nancy Havens, of Rochelle; daughter-in-law, Barbara Havens of Boulder, Colorado; 6 grandchildren: Joshua (Cara) Havens, Esther Havens, Jonny Havens, Anna Havens, Jennifer (Eli) Guetta Peersmann, and Jeff (Chrissy) Peersmann; and 9 great-grandchildren: Ember, Limor, Ethan, Evan, Nicholas, Adeline, Amelie, Alena and Owen.
