Flagg Center

Joyce Florence Young, 92, of Flagg Center, passed away at her home on Sunday, February 28, 2016. Joyce was born December 20, 1923 in Henley-on-Thames, England, the daughter of Herbert and Rose (More) Rollings. She was united in marriage to George Donald Young on May 6, 1943 in Oxford County, England. She absolutely adored Don. Don preceded her in death November 11, 1991. She is also preceded by two sons: Michael and Kenny Young. Joyce was one of the first GI war brides in the Rochelle area. She emigrated to the United States aboard the Italian cruise liner, Vulcan, while her husband was still serving overseas. Joyce loved to garden, knit and crochet. She could knit or crochet almost anything. She put her skill to use working for Caron International, where she would knit patterns that would then be photographed for marketing materials. Joyce was described by her family as a proper, polite English woman but she had a wonderful sense of humor. She was a past member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary at Floyd J. Tilton Post #3878.

Joyce is survived by her daughter, Sherry Young of Flagg Center; son, Clyde (Joanne) Young of Chana; eight grandchildren, Michelle (Rick) Pease, Ricky Young, Melissa Alaniz, Brian Young, Joshua (Heather) Young, Angela (Jose) Rivera-Rosa, Renee Preston, and Rhonda Young; numerous great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; a sister, Dorothy Bishop of Oxon, England, and a nephew, Kevin Bishop.

Visitation will be from 12:00 - 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 3, 2016 at the Unger-Horner Funeral Home, 400 N. 6th St., Rochelle. The funeral service will immediately follow Thursday at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Lowell Woolbright officiating. Interment will follow in Flagg Center Cemetery.
