Judith A. Askeland (June 20, 1941 - October 4, 2014)
Judith "Judi" Ann Askeland of Rochelle, Illinois, died peacefully in her sleep at home on October 4, with her sons nearby, after a short battle with lung cancer. She was 73. Judi was born in Rochelle on June 20, 1941, to Rex Charles and Ruth Eileen (Rucker) Sage. She married Richard Neil Askeland on May 25, 1963 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Rochelle, where she was a lifelong parishioner.
Judi worked as a secretary/bookkeeper for many years at Morgan Dye, Stevens Pontiac and Buick and, finally, John Helfrich Trucking. Judi volunteered many years at St. Patrick's coordinating the set-up for various events. She enjoyed reading, baking, visiting with family and friends and traveling. She was preceded in death by her husband and parents, an infant son, Michael John Askeland, one sister, Dawn Colleen Sage and one brother, Rex Charles "Chuck" Sage Jr.
She is survived by her children, Cheryl "Cheri" Eileen (Askeland) Hayes and husband, Michael Joseph Hayes of Cranberry Township, Pennsylvania, David Lee Askeland and wife, Jenifer Ann (Gildea) Askeland of Rochelle, Danny Robert Askeland and wife, Amy Marie (Prather) Askeland, also of Rochelle; brothers: Dan (Nancy) Sage of Fort Atkins, Wisconsin and Dennis (Mary) Sage of Rochelle; grandchildren: William "Will" Michael Hayes and Kiley Alexandra Hayes of Cranberry Township, Pennsylvania, Zachary "Zack" Richard Askeland, Nate Michael Askeland, and Emily Lynn Bradford of Rochelle; along with many nieces, nephews and cousins.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests any memorial contributions be made to the Ogle County Hospice Association, PO Box 462, Oregon, IL 61061. Visitation will take place from 6:30 pm to 8 pm on Wednesday, October 8, 2014 at the Unger-Horner Funeral Home, 400 N. 6th St., Rochelle. Funeral mass service will be held at St. Patrick's Church, 244 Kelley Drive, Rochelle on Thursday, October 9, at 10:30 am with Father Johnson Lopez officiating. Burial will be at St. Patrick's Cemetery in Rochelle.
