June Florence (Schermerhorn) Whitney, 83, of Rochelle, passed away on Thursday, July 7, 2011 at her home. She was born on June 23, 1928 in Lincoln, NE, the daughter of Walter John Gerald and Katherine Anna (Maseman) Abker. June married William R. Schermerhorn in 1945 and moved to Rochelle in 1947 from Lincoln, NE. She was employed by Krahenbuhl's in Rochelle for 20 years and retired in 1992. June married Clifford Whitney, of Sycamore, in 1991. Clifford preceded her and in 2001 June moved back to Rochelle from Sycamore. She was also preceded by her parents; sisters: Eileen Mills and Evelyn Schaffer; and brother: Glen Abker.

Survivors include her daughters: Sherry Lee (Dan) Whitehead of Mondovi, WI and Connie (Irving) Rolon of Rochelle; son: William R. (Mary) Schermerhorn Jr. of Monroe Center, IL;
father of her children: William Schermerhorn Sr. of Okechobee, FL; step son: John Whitney of Sycamore, IL; sister Marthalene (Abker) Seiple of Naperville, IL; 10 grandchildren: Michael Whitehead of Sherburn, MN, Sonia Kay Whitehead of Mondovi, WI, Lisa (Joel) Vogel of Naperville, Frank (Erica) Schermerhorn of DeKalb,IL, Anna (Brandon) Shearer of Riverview, FL, Laura (David) Rebelak of Rockton, IL, Eric Rolon of Rochelle,IL, Ian Rolon of Rochelle,IL, Christina (Tom) Scholl of Rockford, IL and Michael Schermerhorn of Monroe Center, IL; great grandchildren: Amanda, Jessica, Desiree, Vanessa, Madilyn, Andre, Olivia, Finnian, Aleena, Jenna and Hayden.

June loved to play cards and was a member of two Bridge Clubs. She was also a member of the Friendly Society and was active in the Junior Women's Club for 15 years, and was the President in the 1960's. In 1962, she was instrumental in starting an Alanon group in her home in Rochelle. June loved her family and enjoyed family gatherings. She was the glue that held the family together. June was a member of the Bethlehem Evangelical Lutheran Church for 20 years.

Services will be held on Monday, July 11, 2011 at Bethlehem Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1915 N. First St. in DeKalb with Rev. Gary Erickson at 11:00 AM with visitation from 10 AM to 11 AM. Visitation will also be held at Unger-Horner Funeral Home, 400 N. 6th St. in Rochelle on Sunday July 10th from 2 to 5 PM. Burial at Fairview Cemetery in DeKalb. Memorial to be established.
