Karen Sue Mecklenburg, beloved wife, mother and grandmother, age 74, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 31, 2026 with her family at her side. Born on September 22, 1951 in Spring Valley, IL; Karen was the daughter of Raymond and Adele (Pytlik) Sever. A devoted daughter of Spring Valley, Karen graduated from Hall High School in 1969 and began work in 1972 as a cosmetologist and hair stylist. Cutting and styling hair was her passion; Karen would demonstrate her love for friends and family by taking care of their hair in her in-home salon. Karen helped mold an upcoming generation of cosmetologists working as a cosmetology instructor at Hair Professionals in DeKalb.

After he snuck a kiss at the jukebox at The Klondike, Karen married the love of her life, James M. Mecklenburg, on July 15, 1988 in Monroe, WI. Karen and Jim raised their children in Hillcrest.

In her empty nest years, Karen and Jim enjoyed traveling to visit friends and family across the country. Their travels took them to Florida to visit her brother, Texas to spend time with lifelong friends from her hometown, and to California to visit their son and see San Francisco and Yosemite. Into her last years, Karen kept up with her high school friends monthly.

Karen was preceded in death by her parents. Karen is survived by her husband, Jim Mecklenburg of Rochelle; son, Bryan (Sarah) Zera of Chicago, IL; daughter, Angela (Anthony) Atamian of Algonquin, IL; two grandchildren: Parker and Brooklyn Atamian; her brother, Raymond (Linda) Sever of Peoria, IL; and her sister, Kathy (Chris) Potthoff of Spring Valley, IL as well as her bonus daughter, Carly (Richard) Daugherty of Rochelle, IL and Carly's children: Brenna Walker and her daughter, Tobi Walker, and Grant and Elena Daugherty.

A celebration of Karen’s life will be held on Saturday, August 22 from Noon to 5 pm at the Moose Lodge, 311 N. Main Street in Rochelle. Memorial services will be held at Barto Funeral Home in Spring Valley, IL at a future date.

In lieu of gifts, the family asks that gifts be made to St. Jude Children's Hospital or Mooseheart.
