Laurel "Laurie" Smith, 69, of Rochelle, Illinois, passed away peacefully on Monday, March 24, 2025,surrounded by her loving family.
Born in Rochelle on April 24, 1955, Laurie was the daughter of Maxine I. (Friestad) and C. Henry "Hank" McDermott. A proud lifelong resident of Rochelle; she devoted her life to her family, students, and friends.
Laurie spent 35 years teaching second grade at the original Lincoln School, where she became a beloved and respected educator. She poured her heart into her work and took great pride in shaping young minds. Her love for teaching was only matched by her love for her family. The true joy of Laurie's life was her children and grandchildren. She wanted to be at every game, or special moment, always cheering them on with pride and love. Her warmth and dedication touched everyone who knew her.
Laurie is survived by her three children: Melissa Smith of Rochelle, Adam Smith of New York, and Celina (Josh Lopez) Smith of Rochelle; her four grandchildren: Phelisity, Mason, and Jaxson Lopez, and Colton Smith; and her significant other of 23 years, Nick "Papa" Aguilar. She was the baby sister to Dan McDermott, Vicki LaRue, and Tom McDermott.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Maxine and Hank McDermott, as well as a niece, René and a nephew, Jon.
Laurie will be deeply missed and fondly remembered for her selflessness, her loving heart, and her lifelong commitment to others.
