Malden Walter Woodrick, age 88, of Lindenwood, IL, died June 16, 2008 at Rochelle Rehabilitation and Health Care Center. He was born on May 16, 1920 in Rochelle, son of Walter and Dorothea Friday Woodrick. He married Mabel Theresa Jaeger on
December 29, 1944 on a 30-day furlough from the army. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII from June 13, 1944 to June 9, 1946 and was stationed in France and Germany for a year. Malden was a faithful member and servant of St. Paul Ev. Lutheran Church, Rochelle for 25 years, and later a faithful member and servant of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Lindenwood for 33 years.
His wife Mabel predeceased him on August 12, 2000; his sister Dorothy on December 23, 1930 and his son-in-law Gerald Smith on November 26, 1997. Survivors include 2 daughters: Arlene Janet Smith and Marla Woodrick (Jack) Mazzenga; 4 grandchildren: Brian (Kelly) Smith, Rachael (Antony) Lacey, Aaron (Jobina) Smith, and Sarah (Patrick) Bourgord and 8 great grandchildren: Nicholas, Peter Walter and Ethan Smith, Hayden and Kennedy Smith, Paige Theresa and Samantha Bourgord and Tayleigh Lacey.
Malden worked as a machinist for Whitcomb Locomotive Co., Rochelle, from 1937 until 1956 and for Barber Colman, Rockford, from Feb. 14, 1956 to Feb. 1, 1983 when he retired. He enjoyed many interests including electronics and TV repair, computers, woodworking, and fishing. He was a big fan of guitar music especially Les Paul and Chet Atkins and was a huge rail fan, spending many hours in the Rochelle Train Park. He volunteered for many years at the Franklin Grove Nursing Home and was an active participant at the Hub City Senior Center. He and his wife also started a flagpole fund to designate a memorial to former railroad workers in the train park.
Services will be at 11:00 am on Friday, June 20, 2008 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Lindenwood with the Rev. David Yarrington officiating. Visitation will be from 9:30 am to 11:00 AM on Friday at the church prior to the funeral service. Burial will be in Lindenwood Cemetery with a military service by the V.F.W. Post 3878. Memorials have been designated to Immanuel Lutheran Church. Unger Horner Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
