Martha Scott Gillis (95), formerly of Rochelle, died peacefully in the early morning hours of August 9, 2021 from complications of Alzheimer's disease, at Iowa Masonic Health Center in Bettendorf, Iowa.
Martha was born November 3, 1925, in Liberal, KS to George and Mary (Payne) Scott. She was the youngest of eight children.
She is preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Donald E. Gillis, her parents, four brothers: Gladden Scott, Marshal Scott of Kansas, Wilson Scott of Rockford, Il and Eugene (Bus) Scott of Rochelle along with three sisters: Sarah Helms of Rochelle, Alma Cantwell and Grace Toland of Kansas.
Martha married Donald E. Gillis on May 28, 1949, and is survived by their three children, Cynthia (Roger) Rhodes of Davenport, IA, Susan Gillis of Eldridge, IA and Donald I. Gillis of Milford, MI. Grandchildren: Andrew Rhodes (Angela) of Dewitt, IA, Karen Chappell (Seth) of Davenport, IA, Keir Gillis, and Logan Gillis of Milford, MI, as well as three great-grandchildren: Adelaide and Asher Rhodes and Seth (Ru) Chappell II. She is also survived by her sister-in-law: Lois Gillis Turkington of Rochelle and numerous, loving nieces, nephews, and their children and grandchildren.
Throughout her life, Martha had varied interests and the desire to give back to her community. When her children were young, she was a room mother, Bluebird, Camp Fire and Cub Scout leader. As her children got older, and afforded more time, she actively volunteered at church, served in Eastern Star, volunteered at the food pantry and Rochelle hospital. She played cards regularly and enjoyed cooking and baking to which many family, neighbors and friends can attest. She was excellent at it and her recipes will be treasured by future generations.
Her family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Silvercrest Retirement Village Davenport, IA and Iowa Masonic Health Center Bettendorf, IA. They showed genuine compassion, love and empathy and provided excellent care in the final months and days of Martha's life.
Cremation care has been provided. A Celebration of Life service will be held at the United Methodist Church of Rochelle on August 20, 2021 at 10:30 AM. Burial will be at a later date at Lawnridge Cemetery in Rochelle, IL. Memorials may be made to The Rochelle Christian Food Pantry. Please visit www.ungerhorner.com to sign the online guest book.
