Surrounded by her family, Mary Lou Woodard Helms of Ashton, IL; went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2008. She died after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.
She was born July 10, 1942, the daughter of George and Mary Kummrow Woodard in Morrison, IL. She married Roger P. Kaufman on August 31, 1959. She married John W. Helms on March 19, 1965 in Rochelle, IL.
She was a member of the class of 1960, Morrison High School. She retired from Silgan/Del Monte in Rochelle, Il., after 32 years of service. Her family was the most important part of her life. Along with family gatherings, she also enjoyed traveling, gardening, horses, and hiking. She was a member of a Bible Study in Ashton that met weekly. She was a member of the Illinois Lincoln Highway Association.
Survivors include her husband of 43 years, John, of Ashton. Her children Chris (Joe) Mahieu, East Moline, IL and Jeff (Phyllis) Kaufman, Lynn Haven, Fl, three grandchildren, Josh (Kareicia) Mahieu, Davenport, IA, Aaron Mahieu, Moline, Il. and Winnie Kaufman, Lynn Haven, FL, and one great grandchild, Joshua Keith Mahieu, Davenport, Ia. Four sisters, Ginny (Chuck) Appelbaum, Colona, IL, Margie (Greg) Zack, Pittsford, New York, Marty (Jack) Collier, and Georgette (Paul) Seger, South Fulton, TN.. Eight brothers, George (Linda) Woodard, Phoenix, AR, Jim (Marilyn) Woodard, Westfield, IN, Rick Tilton, Warsaw, IN, Wesley Tilton (Betty), Pierceton, IN, Allen (Miranda) Woodard, Leesburg, FL, Ralph (Judy) Woodard, Jackson, MI, Ronnie Woodard, Jackson, MI, and Randy (Ellen) Woodard, Northville, MI. , her step mother, Mary Woodard, Dewitt, MI, and many aunts, cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends. She also leaves behind her little dog, Sadie. She was preceded in death by her father, George A. Woodard, and her mother, Mary Kummrow Tilton.
Services are at the Ashton United Methodist Church in Ashton, IL, on Monday,
Dec. 8, 2008 at 11 AM, with Rev. Monica William. Visitation will be at Unger-
Horner Funeral Home, 400 N. 6th St., Rochelle, IL on Sunday, Dec. 7th from
2 to 6 PM. Burial will be at Washington Grove Cemetery. In lieu of Flowers: Memorials to CaringBridge, Granny Rose Animal Shelter or to Pancreatic Cancer Action Network.
