Norma Jean Johnston, age 80 of Holcomb, IL passed away on Sunday, Sept. 24, 2006 at her home. She was born on Feb. 12, 1926 in Holcomb, the daughter of Howard Nash and Eva Clarissa (Stanbury) Johnston.
She attended eight years at Holcomb Grade School and then Rockford West High School. Norma graduated from the University of Illinois in 1948 with a Liberal Arts & Science Degree and was a member of Alpha Gamma Delta Sorority. After living in Washington, DC, she was employed by the Chicago, World Book Encyclopedia, and the Chicago Daily News (Sun Times) as an editorial librarian. She returned to Holcomb on March 1, 1974 to care for her father, who was in failing health. Preceding her in death were her parents and a sister, Caroline, who died in infancy.
She was a member of the Holcomb Chapter of the Eastern Star, 75th year Worthy Matron. Her grandmother, Jennie Stanbury, was founding Worthy Matron in 1900 and was treasurer for seven years. Her mother, Eva, was also Worthy Matron, making Norma the third generation to serve as Worthy Matron. She was also a member of the Belvidere Chapter of B Adeline, the Rochelle Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and the Holcomb Presbyterian Church.
She is survived by cousins: Jane Kolb of Zurich, Switzerland, Frances White of Walnut Creek, CA, Madeline Kaiser of Rockford, Joan McKoane of Sarasota, FL, Cleo Boger of Minnetonka, MN, Robert J. Piper of Winnetka, IL, Leo G. "Jerry" Piper of DeKalb, Sylvia Peterson of Dundein, FL, and Elaine Lamporte of Longlake, NY, and special friends: Nikki Doane of Holcomb, IL, Oxana Valk of Machesney Park, IL and George Bland of Holcomb, IL.
The family would like to give a special thank you to the Visiting Nurses Association Hospice for all their wonderful care.
Funeral services will be held at Unger-Horner Funeral Home, 400 N 6th St., Rochelle on Thursday, Sept. 28, 2006 at 11:00 AM with Rev. Carl Polstra officiating. Visitation will be held Thursday, from 10 to 11 AM prior the funeral service at Unger-Horner. Burial will be at Lindenwood Cemetery and memorials can be made to the Holcomb Fire Department or to Visiting Nurses Association Hospice.
