Chicago, IL – Oliva Reppine, 89, died in Chicago on Labor Day, September 7, 2009 after a long illness. For all but the last 6 years, she was a life-long resident of the Rochelle area. She resided at the Methodist Home of Chicago.
Ollie was born in Rochelle on December 22, 1921 in a farm house on South Main Street to James and Carrie Olson Spath. On her birthday in 1940, she married Albert Reppine of Steward, IL, to whom she was wed 25 years, until his untimely death in 1966. Also preceding her in death, in addition to her first husband, parents and two infant children was her brother, Matthew Spath and her second husband, Pat Flanagan, as well as her great and dear friend Margaret Blomberg. She is survived by her son, Al Reppine, of Alameda, California, as well as numerous cousins and extended family locally.
She attended Rochelle schools and graduated from Rochelle Township High School, Class of 1940. For most of her life, she was a homemaker. Later, she worked in the food service industry, including cooking at Rochelle Community Hospital, Americana Nursing Center and Northern Illinois University at DeKalb. She loved her home, gardening and cooking and was very fond of generations of pet cats. A member of the First United Methodist Church of Rochelle for over six decades, she was later received into the congregation of St. Jude's Episcopal Church before moving to Chicago.
Through the many challenges of her life, she was buoyed by her intelligence and wit and the many friends and acquaintances she made during her journey. Most recently, at the Methodist Home Ollie was supported by her special caregiver and friend, Ms. Gerry Elvis and dear volunteers and friends Mary and Tara, as well as all the staff there. Nancy Detig was a true friend for many years. Our gratitude to her physician, Dr. Noel DeBacker, of Northwestern's Geriatric Medicine Section, cannot be expressed. Many thanks to Northwestern's Hospice Services for their remarkable support.
A memorial service to celebrate Ollie's life is scheduled at the Methodist Home of Chicago, 1415 W. Foster Ave., Chicago, for Friday, September 25th at 2:30 PM. A graveside service will be held at Lawnridge Cemetery at 10 AM that morning.
