Obituary

Opal L. Harmon, 98, formerly from Esmond, IL, passed away Friday, April 24, 2015 in Beloit, WI. Opal was born January 22, 1917 in DeKalb County, North of Genoa to Ray and Ethel (Montgomery) Amos. She graduated from Belvidere High School in 1934. She then attended Northern Illinois State Teacher's College in DeKalb, IL, where she earned her Bachelor of Science Degree and Teaching Certificate in 1938. After College she married Kenneth Charles Harmon on December 23, 1939, in Belvidere, IL.

Opal and Kenneth moved to Esmond in 1942 where he farmed and they raised their family. They were active in the community and the local United Methodist Church. In her professional career Opal was a Social Worker for the Department of Children and Family Services for the State of Illinois. She was a member of the Business and Professional Women's Association in Rochelle. She also served as Treasurer of the DeKalb District United Methodist Women for many years as well as a Lay Member to the Northern Illinois Conference of The United Methodist Church. She was a member of the Genoa chapter of the Eastern Star and served as chaplain.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth, on November 16, 1965, her parents and two sisters: Alma Myers and Irene Harmon.

Opal is survived by her three sons: Michael (Elena) Harmon of Worthington, MN, Thomas (Susan) Harmon of Park Rapids, MN, and David (Terri) Harmon of Machesney Park, IL, eight grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren.

The funeral service will be at 12:00 P.M., Saturday, May 2, 2015 at the Esmond United Methodist Church, 675 Main Street, Esmond, with Pastors David Rogula and Thomas Harmon officiating. Visitation will be from 6:00 P.M. – 8:00 P.M., Friday, May 1 at the Unger-Horner Funeral Home, 400 N. 6th Street, Rochelle. Burial will follow the funeral service at Greenview Cemetery in Esmond.
