Ovall Eugene "Gene" Wood, beloved husband, father and grandfather, age 80 of Rochelle, IL died Tuesday Nov. 2, 2010 after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Wayne City, IL on Nov. 24,1929 the son of Marie Wood and step son of Red Barringer. Gene graduated from
Rochelle High School in 1947. He was very active in the community received the Community Man of the Year Award in 1997.Memberships include First Presbyterian Church, VFW Post 3878, Kiwanis Golden K, and volunteered for Meals on Wheels, Focus House, Christian Pantry, and Presbyterian Thrift Shop. He was a U. S. Air Force veteran serving in the Korean War. Gene married his high school sweetheart, Donna Marie Secoy on June 22, 1951. In 1985, he retired as Plant Superintendent at DelMonte Can Plant.
Survivors include his wife Donna of Rochelle; daughters: Linda (Phillip) Kimbrell of Aiken, SC,
Susan (Mark) Hendrix of Honea Path, SC and Melissa (Robert) King of Rochelle; grandchildren:
Alan (Kristy) Kimbrell of Elko, NV, Sara Stone of Brandon, FL, Daniel Stone of Brandon, FL
and Rachel Cardott of Rochelle,
Preceding him in death, were his parents: Marie and Red Barringer and an infant daughter: Lisa Wood.
Services will be held at the First Presbyterian Church on Friday, Nov. 5, 2010 at 10:00 AM
with Rev. James Tilley. Visitation will be Thursday from 4 to 7 PM at Unger-Horner Funeral Home in Rochelle. Family requests memorials to Ogle County Hospice or to the First Presbyterian Church. Burial at Lawnridge Cemetery in Rochelle with military services by VFW Post 3878.
