Phillip W. May Jr., 86 of Rochelle, passed away on Wed., Dec. 30, 2009 at Rochelle Community
Hospital. He was born on Jan. 28, 1923 in Rochelle to Phillip W. and Ada Jane (McConaughy) May. Attended Rochelle Township High School graduating in 1941 and then attended Drake University until he enlisted in the US Air Force serving 3 years where he piloted P40's.
Phil married Mary Jeanne Lingenfelter on Feb. 10, 1944 in DesMoines, IA. He was a real estate Broker and developer since 1950. Owned May Asparagus Co. and donated the land for Phil W. May Sr. Grade School, Rochelle Middle School and First United Presbyterian Church. Developed the May and Greenhurst subdivisions, and the May Mart Shopping Center and owned May Realty. He organized the Rochelle State Bank in 1956 and was president for seven years. Was a member of the Rochelle Street Department Advisory Board from 1971 to 1975. President of the Rochelle Community Hospital and Board member for 12 years, serving as President during the new construction. Life member of Flagg Township Historical Society, 1970 Kiwanis Club Man of the Year, 75 year member of First Presbyterian Church in Rochelle, Rochelle Rotary Club, Horicon Lodge, Tabala Temple and Freeport Consistory and 50 year member of Free Masons of IL. Preceding him in death were his parents and sisters: Phillippa May, and Mary Turkington.
Survivors include his wife Jeanne of Rochelle; 2 sons: Phillip ( Dr. Joan McEachern) May III of Pine Top, AZ and James F. (Merilyn) May of Rochelle; daughter: Deborah (Stephen) Scherer of Los Angeles, CA; 6 grandchildren: Phillip (Cactus) May IV of Haselton, TX, Cory (Michelle) May of Scottsdale, AZ, Rachel Anne Scherer, Los Angeles, CA, Benjamin Scherer of Chicago, IL, Jay (Stacey) Taft of Rochelle and Dana (James) Ptucha of Long Island, NY; great grandchildren: Haley, Trey and Roxy Taft, Aiden Redsteer, Tessa and Tara Ptucha, Bricen Babcox, Zackery Taylor and Taylor May; and sister: Barbara Kledzik of Norfolk, VA.
A memorial service will be Tuesday, Jan. 5th, 2010 at 10:00 AM. at the First Presbyterian Church in Rochelle with Rev. Dr. John Hamilton. Visitation will be from 3 to 6 PM, Monday, Jan. 4th at Unger-Horner Funeral Home. Cremation rites arranged by Unger-Horner with inurnment at Lawnridge Cemetery. Memorials to First Presbyterian Church,Rochelle Community Hospital, Shriners Children's Hospital or to Hub City Senior Center.
