Beside a western water tank one cold December day, inside an empty boxcar a dying hobo lay. His buddy stood beside him with a low and drooping head, listening to the last words the luckless loafer said.

He said, I'm going to a better land where everything is bright. Where handouts grow on bushes and you sleep out every night. I'm going to a land where I don't have to work, you don't even have to change your socks. Little streams of whiskey come trickling down the rocks.
Tell my girlfriend back in Rockford her face no more I'll view. Tell her I caught the last train and I'm going through. Tell her not to weep for me, no tears her eyes must lurk. I'm going to a land where I never have to work.
Hey buddy, the train's coming, I gotta catch it on the fly. Farewell my friend I gotta leave you, it ain't so hard to die. The hobo stopped, his head fell back, he'd sang his last refrain.
His buddy grabbed his hat and shoes and jumped the eastbound train!
A favorite of Dad's that he could recite until his last day.
