Obituary

Richard “Rich” Howard Melton, age 85, passed away at his home on Saturday, February 21, 2026. He was born on November 23, 1940 in Rochelle, the son of Howard and Melba (Lamar) Melton.

Rich proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War, an experience he carried with him the rest of his life. Following his military service, he spent more than 38 years working at Swift in Rochelle before his retirement.

He was a dedicated member of St. Paul Lutheran Church and the Rochelle Wildlife Conservation Club. He served as a longtime board member of the club and was especially known for organizing the clubs annual fish sales, helping ensure local ponds were replenished each season. An avid fisherman, he found great joy in spending time on the water and sharing his love of fishing with others.

Above all, Rich was a devoted father and proud grandfather. He cherished time spent with his family, especially when sharing stories from his younger years. His steady presence, kind heart, and love for family will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

Rich is preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his two sons, Brett Melton and Ross Melton, both of Rochelle; and one granddaughter, Nikki (John) Melton Schaible.

There will be no services. Cremation care provided by the Unger Horner Funeral Home, 400 N 6th St., Rochelle. A guest book is available at www.UngerHorner.com.

Memorials may be made to the Rochelle Wildlife Conservation Club in his honor.
