Robert C. Furjanic, 92, of Rochelle, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family at Serenity Hospice & Home on February 7, 2016. Bob was born on August 12, 1923 to Joseph and Mary (Ostrowski) Furjanic in Chicago, IL. He married Rose Shuleff in 1947. He was later remarried to LaVaun (Bonnie) Morrison from March 1975 to June 2014 until she passed away.

Bob received a battlefield commission prior to the Battle of the Bulge in WWII. He remained in the Army Reserve for over 35 years and attained the rank of Lieutenant Colonel before retiring.

Upon returning home from the war, he took advantage of the benefits under the G.I. Bill and graduated from Northern Illinois State Teachers College (now NIU) with a degree in Education. He accepted a teaching position at Malta Elementary School for two years prior to joining the Prudential Insurance Company as the Rochelle area agent for the next 33 years until he retired. On occasion, he also was a substitute teacher at Central School and the High School.

Bob also served as Fire & Police Commissioner for one term and
on the City Council from 1979-1983

He spent his retirement years traveling, spoiling his grandchildren, and enjoying life.

He was a loving father to five children: Robert R.(Sheila) Furjanic, Croton, NY; Nicolette (Tony) Merridy, Queens Village, NY; Stephen (Patricia) Morrison, Mt. Pleasant, SC, Melinda (John) Condon of Floral City, FL and Lisa (Jonathan) Dreyer, Antioch, IL; 7 grandchildren: Cheryl Furjanic, Michael Furjanic, Aaron Dreyer, Sara Dreyer, John Condon, Cameron Morrison, Nicholas Morrison; and one great grandchild: Cal Vaughn Patterson.

He was a dear brother of Charles (Sandra) Furjanic and brother-in-law to Violet Furjanic as well as a fond uncle for many nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, February 13, 2016 at the Unger-Horner Funeral Home, 400 N. 6th St., Rochelle, IL with nephew, Matthew Furjanic, officiating. Visitation will be from 5:00 – 8:00 P.M. on Friday, February 12th and from 10:00 to 11:00 A.M. prior to the service. Cremation rites will follow the service with interment at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. Memorials may be made to the Rochelle Fire Department Ambulance Fund in lieu of flowers.
