Robert James Smith, Jr. (Bob, Bert), 60, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Sunday, November 12, 2017 at St. Anthony Hospital, in Rockford, IL., from a hemorrhage in the brain. Robert was born December 5, 1956 in Dayton, OH. to Robert and Betty (Gregory) Smith.
Robert was a semi driver, carpenter, and mechanic in his working career. He had a love for fishing, playing cards and singing. Robert loved to spend time with family and friends. He also was always willing to help anyone out, no matter the task, and he was never afraid of hard work. Robert was a loving, compassionate and caring brother, father, and grandfather and will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
He is proceeded in death by his parents, brothers; Richard L. Smith and Mark E. Smith; wives, Jeri Smith-Grant and Janet Smith; and several uncles.
He is survived by his daughter, Bobbi Jo Smith; grandson, Blaze Jakobe Smith; two brothers, Gregory A. (Gay) Smith Sr. of Louisiana, and James (Betsy) Smith of Lindenwood; eight nieces and nephews; Gregory A. Smith Jr., Gwyndolyn Bemis, Nicole Wingert, Asha Prevost, Michael Arbuckle, Brady Smith, Eric Lovelady, and Alex Smith; great-nephews and nieces, Gregory A. Smith III, Hunter Smith, Jeremy Smith, Joseph J. Slatton, Logan Stoker and Kennedy Wingert; and sisters-in-law, Denise (Richard) Smith of Rochelle and Vicki (Mark) Smith-Wren.
A memorial service will be held at 4:30 P.M. on Saturday, November 18, 2017 at the Ashton United Methodist Church, 906 Richardson Avenue, Ashton, IL with the Rev. Robert Hamilton officiating. The visitation will be from 4:00 to 4:30 P.M. prior to the service at the church and then balloons will be released following the service. The family asks you to join them for a light meal afterwards.
The family would like to thank the Ridge Ambulance service and the ICU nurses at St. Anthony Hospital.
