Sheila Nell Hooghkirk, 73, passed away Tuesday, October 3, 2023 at her home in Rochelle, Illinois.  Sheila was born on October 3, 1950 in Richland Center, WI to Roy W. and Colleen L. (Young) Staum.  She worked in the records and registration department at Northern Illinois University for many years.

Sheila is survived by her two sons: Robert Schinkel of Chicago, IL and Brett Hooghkirk of Springfield, IL; significant other, John Volkert of Rochelle; three step children: Bobbie Jo (Juan) Leon of Rochelle, Scott (Stacey) Volkert and Jennifer Senter both of Cadette, MO; brother, Kim (Susan) Staum of Tamarack, MN; sister, Rhonda (Brian Christensen) Staum of Aitkin, MN; 11 grandchildren: Michael Tapia, Malia Vasquez, Ryan Hooghkirk, Rebecca Volkert, Tyler Rains, Crystal Rains, Bailey Volkert, Kirsten Volkert, Emily Wheeler, Austin Everest, Ava Volkert, Lainie Jo Volkert, Taytum Leon and Leo Leon; three great grandchildren: Victoria, Nova and Koda and her great friends, Renae Mason and Carolyn Voss.

The visitation will be from 5:00 - 7:00 P.M., Friday, October 6, 2023 at the Unger-Horner Funeral Home, 400 N. 6th St., Rochelle.  Burial will be at a later date at Dixon-Volkert Cemetery in Elizabethtown, IL.  A memorial will be established at a later date.
